Police are hunting “disgusting”

people who left a sackful of human faeces in the entrance of a busy supermarket.

The cement bag was filled with excrement, placed in a shopping trolley and pushed against the front doors of Tesco in New Road, Durrington.

The manager of the store found the cement bag when he was opening the shop in the morning.

Security officers and shop staff immediately worked to clear the mess from the shop and police were called to the scene.

A Tesco spokesman described the act as “disgusting” and assured customers the site was thoroughly cleaned to avoid any health risks.

He said: “I can confirm it happened and would like to reassure customers there was a very thorough clean-up following this disgusting protest.”

Worthing Borough Council leader Keith Mercer criticised the people who left the foul bag outside the supermarket.

He said: “I certainly deplore vandals of any sort and it would be quite revolting if anyone had deliberately left a bag of faeces outside any store in Worthing, including Tesco.”

Worthing Chief Inspector Sharon Rowe said: “It was very unpleasant for the manager of the shop who found it against his front door when opening up.

“It appeared to be human excrement in a cement bag placed in a trolley, which was pushed against the front door.”

Chief Insp Rowe said police had received no reports of any similar incidents at the supermarket or at any others in Worthing.
