The Business of Murder is a unique thriller, which for the most part is absorbing - and full of twists.
This production is a total success because Richard Harris's psychological, intricate drama is superbly directed by Ian Masters and Ian Dickens and has a talented cast of Todd Carty, Nick Waring and Jacqueline Roberts.
Roberts deserves special praise for the natural way she portrays glamorous TV writer Dee Redmond, overcoming the handicap of using crutches to support her heavily-bound foot.
Like Roberts, Carty and Waring have also appeared in TV's The Bill and this no doubt helps Carty to come across so convincingly as arrogant Detective Inspector Hallett.
Waring excels as the mysterious Mr Stone, who persuades both Hallett and Redmond to come to his flat. He tells Hallett his son is selling drugs and asks Redmond to discuss a play his wife has written. But the fact that Hallett and Redmond have been enjoying an affair suggests Stone's reasons for his invitations are sinister.
There isn't much sexual chemistry between Carty and Roberts, but they are meeting under pressure - and they skilfully build up the suspense.
Carty's cynical policeman also provides several moments of humour with statements such as "Insanity is hereditary - you get it from your kids!"
