With regard to the article on Rebecca Phillips and Grant Blackwell’s ruined holiday in Las Vegas (The Argus, August 14), $599 for a hotel room for one night is a huge amount.
I was lucky enough to spend the whole of 2002 touring the US in a mobile home, making two visits to Las Vegas. We stayed at Sam’s Town, in Boulder Highway, which is a caravan park alongside the hotel and casino.
Our mother joined us for Christmas in Las Vegas, staying in the hotel which only cost $700 for two weeks. The price varied depending on the particular night. It averaged $15 a night rising to $100 for Christmas and New Year’s Eve.
My advice to anybody holidaying in Las Vegas is to avoid the hotels and casinos on the main strip. Go on the internet and book into a hotel on the outskirts of town. The hotel facilities at Sam’s Town were of the highest quality and the low price for accommodation was made up by profits in the casino.
