Thanks to The Argus for the positive coverage of the demonstration for a new skatepark at The Level (The Argus, August 20). You often hear it said that young people aren’t interested in politics, so it was great to join more than 75 skaters and BMXers at the demonstration on Monday in an effort to bring the need for new facilities to the attention of local councillors.

The most important thing about the Labour Government’s “myplace” funding is that it is in addition to the £1.34 million Brighton and Hove already receives under Government schemes. Young people themselves help to decide what sort of facilities are provided.

At another meeting on Tuesday, local community and youth workers agreed to visit skateparks in Saffron Walden and Crawley to see what can be achieved when those who use the facilities are involved.

There is a possibility this could become a community project using local labour and involving young people who could learn new skills.

Properly managed new facilities and the involvement of young people in the design and development would create ownership and encourage positive use of the space. This would benefit young people, enabling them to have a safe place to enjoy healthy outdoor activities.

We will all be looking now to Brighton and Hove City Council to listen to local young people by putting in a bid under this scheme and turn their hopes into reality.
