A former football club owner has appeared in court accused of cheating the Inland Revenue.

Millionaire businessman Azwar Majeed, 32, who used to run Crawley Town FC, faces one count alleging tax evasion between April 1 2003 and March 30 last year.

A second charge claims he concealed criminal property in the form of £491,810 between September 5 and October 3 2006.

Majeed did not enter any pleas at the hearing at London’s Southwark Crown Court.

Judge Andrew Goymer fixed arraignment for December 19.

He told the defendant, of North Street, Brighton, his six-week trial was due to begin on February 2 next year.

His bail was continued.
