Proof, a story of relationships and mathematics, asks questions with no formulaic answers.
Has Catherine, daughter of brilliant mathematician Robert, inherited his genius?
Has she also inherited his madness? Is the mathematical proof in question Catherine’s work or her dead father’s? And, if it is hers, can she prove her ownership?
At times this performance felt a little rough around the edges. However, if not always succinctly expressed, Catherine’s grief for both the love and the youth she has lost, the friction between her and her sister, and awkward researcher Hal’s clumsy attempts to ask her out, felt all the more real for it.
Most touching, however, were the scenes between Catherine and her father.
Chris Hislop gave a convincing performance as the professor, illustrating the selfish nature of both genius and insanity, while Charlotte Hay, as Catherine, poignantly demonstrated the sacrifices love demands.
