There was no rug and little romance in Terry Saunders’ and Mark Allen’s show.

Despite this, the duo established a cosy intimacy with their couple-dominated audience that put our minds at rest – we were not about to be mocked for succumbing to this commercial calendar date.

The show was a pick ’n’ mix affair – not very many stories about love (it turned out that Terry and Mark were somewhat romantically challenged), a cat anecdote, some multimedia in the form of a “live” blind date and a smattering of jokes courtesy of comedians Brett Goldstein and Sara Pascoe.

Actually, it was Sara who provided most of the jokes. Brett opted for a rather bleak, autobiographical story about a Russian stripper.

Resembling Stephen Merchant’s better-looking brother, Terry’s shambolic style of comedy worked well in the informal setting. It was a gently amusing rather than rib-ticklingly funny performance, which could have done without the additions of Sara and Brett.
