A woman pensioner was cut free from her car after hitting a tree and plunging into a stream.
The crash happened between the A27 Shoreham flyover and the Old Cement Works on the A283.
The Ford Fiesta left the road and careered down a ten-foot embankment at about 5.40pm on Tuesday.
Emergency services spent about two hours at the scene.
Firefighters, hampered by the depth of the ditch, managed to cut the roof off the car and rescue the woman.
The woman, aged 61, from Storrington, badly broke her leg and was taken to Worthing Hospital. Her condition was not thought to be life-threatening.
Anyone who saw the crash is asked to call Sussex Police's road policing unit on 0845 6070999 quoting Operation Strasbourg.
