Hollywood Box Office analyst types are gloating that there has been huge success recently for 'Womens Pictures'. Looking at big bucks for Sex and the City, The Devil Wears Prada, Mamma Mia, He's Just Not That Into You and more recently The Young Victoria. These films were cheap(ish) to make, had high profile female stars and turned a big profit very quickly. Therefore you can expect to see a lot more of these films cloggin up our screens very shortly. However when we look at our box office breakdown, we noticed that a higher majority of tickets sold are to pensioners. Senior citizens are visiting the cinemas much more often than their younger counterparts. They are pretty much our exclusive cleintele on a weekday afternoon.

Despite this, you dont really get a lot of 'Pensioners Pictures'. Films that the older audience like to see aren't specifically aimed at them, they usually just happen to be the best examples of their genre. So great dramas will be as popular as great comedies and so on. I think this is great. It is not as condescending as other audience types (eg - A womans film must contain a shopping montage, a mans film must have at least one thing explode). Older audiences are not as shy and retiring as we like to think either, Senior customers will often flock to challenging films with controversial subject matter because they have heard good things about it.

So next time you are considering taking your grandparents to the cinema - try asking them what they would ACTUALLY like to see. You might be surprised.

You should also tell them about our 'Senior Screen'. We run a film specifically for this audience on a Thursday Morning. Doors Open at 10am. Film start at 10:30am. Free tea, coffee & biscuits. Tickets only £2.50. We try and films that people may have missed and we have a regular audience who we just ask what they would like to see. So come on down - All ages welcome!
