A series of mystery vibrations are baffling residents in Portslade.

The strange sensations, likened to tinnitus, have been ringing around the area since August. But residents and businesses are stumped over its origins.

The Argus was contacted anonymously by a resident of Locks Crescent who has been feeling the sensation.

She said: “It’s been ruining my life I just have to find out the cause. Ican only feel it when it’s really quiet or when I m lying down.

“At first I thought it was the Shoreham power station but I’ve been feeling them on days it is closed.”

The woman believes the source is a low-frequency noise. This is a sound that is uncomfortably loud to one person but may be inaudible to others.

She said at least three other people have experienced a similar feeling. Vibratechniques, based in Chapel Road, Portslade, make electric and pneumatic vibrators for industrial use.

Greg Pearce, from the firm, said I’ve personally never felt a thing and I know it’s nothing to do with us.

“If something did happen, the lasers in the computer-controlled machinery would have detected any disturbances.”

EDF Energy sent their environmental operations manager to the area after The Argus contacted them.

The investigator examined electricity distribution equipment in the area and visited the local substations.

A spokesman said: “His conclusion is that there is no problem with our equipment or the work we have undertaken in the area during the past few months that could have caused the problems. It is likely to be an issue emanating from within the building.”
