ROLLS-ROYCE is returning to its roots with the official name for its new model series, previously known as RR4.

The new car will be called the Rolls-Royce Ghost and production will begin at the company’s Goodwood manufacturing plant later in the year.

The firm’s original Silver Ghost was unveiled in 1906 and got its name from its “ghost-like”

quietness. It is now regarded as one of the most valuable cars in the world, with some selling for up to $35 million.

Announcing the name at the recent Shanghai motor show, chief executive Tom Purves said: “We are delighted to formally announce the Rolls-Royce Ghost.

It is one of the most revered names in the automotive industry, evoking images of adventure and technical innovation.

“The name reflects this new model’s breadth of abilities. The first cars to bear the Ghost name were known not only for their impressive dependability and refinement but also for their great flair and style.

“This car will be the first in a new generation of models to carry this evocative name and will give us two pinnacle product lines – Phantom and Ghost.”

Since development of the new car began in 2006, Rolls-Royce has hired about 200 extra employees to cope with its production, bringing the total number of staff at Goodwood to 700.

The Ghost will be built on its own production line at the plant but will share paint, wood and leather workshops with the Phantom car series.
