Sara Brown’s letter “Up the poles” (Letters, April 21) commented on the posts around Rotting-dean green.

The parish council does not think the posts are an improvement.

We regretted the need to have them installed, which was for the safety of people young and old, rather than to meet safety legislation.

Recently, the number of people driving across the green has significantly increased. I have seen and photographed a car racing from near the Elms to a space in front of the Dene and another vehicle regularly parking on the west side. The parish council has frequently heard of similar incidents, including drivers moving the rocks to turn around on the green and of a driver performing an emergency stop to avoid hitting two children. Brighton and Hove City Council vehicles were parking on it, in spite of us requesting for this to stop. We have also heard of im-patient southbound drivers cutting across to turn north up the Falmer Road to avoid village hold-ups.

I did not blame local schools for these parking problems. We had previously sought the help of local schools to request parents not to break parking regulations. They have printed notes to this effect, to no avail.

There were no red herrings at this meeting, only people expressing their concerns and experiences. The village green is owned by Brighton and Hove City Council and thus the height of the posts was specified by their highways department.

We find it frustrating that a selfish minority of drivers are spoiling the enjoyment of our village green for the majority of our residents and visitors.
