Driving to my home in Saltdean from Newhaven recently, I was in the single lane of the A259 heading west, with the bus lane on my left. In the single lane on the opposite side was a stream of traffic heading east. Suddenly I was aware of an ambulance coming quite fast, with its lights flashing and siren on, also heading east in the single lane.

A lorry in the same lane slowed down to let the ambulance overtake him, which meant I had the ambulance coming over into the lane I was in. There was nothing I could do but move into the bus lane. If there had been a bus or, more importantly, a taxi or motorbike, both of which travel at high speed in the bus lane, there could have been a serious accident.

You cannot blame the emergency services for what happened or any of the road users.

The new road system is a potential death trap. It has created more congestion and has cost a fortune. Whoever is responsible for its design should take the nightmare of what they have done to the A259 to their grave.
