An armed robber was stopped by members of the public as he attempted to hold up a mobile phone shop this evening.

The man burst into King of GSM in St James's Street, Kemp Town, Brighton, at about 8.20pm brandishing a gun.

But thanks to resistance from staff and customers, his raid was thwarted.

During the scuffle one man was seriously injured.

Detective Inspector Tim Piloni, of Sussex Police, said: "Police were called to a shop in St James's Street where a man was attempting to rob a store with a gun.

"A man was stopped by staff and members of the public prior to police arrival.

"A gun was secured. Details of the weapon are currently being established - we're unclear at this stage whether it's real or an imitation gun."

As police taped off the area around the store, crowds of people gathered in shock at what had happened.

David Daly, from the Tea Cosy Tea Rooms in nearby George Street, witnessed the raid. He told The Argus: "I saw a gun, and there was blood everywhere."

Police were tonight questioning a man over the incident.
