Johnny Flynn And The Sussex Wit turned out to be just Johnny Flynn, but no one was complaining.

The London singer-songwriter’s music is suffused with country and western influences so the decision to play a solo acoustic set inside a church could not have been more appropriate.

With its roots in American’s bible belt, God has always been a huge part of the genre with everyone from Johnny Cash to Billy Ray Cyrus name-checking the man upstairs in their songs.

Whether Flynn is himself a believer or not is a moot point – Brighton’s Unitarian Church was undoubtedly the best possible venue to demonstrate his considerable talents.

Its high white walls provided superb acoustics, allowing Flynn’s dexterous guitar playing and deep, resonating voice to rise up and fill the large chamber and enthral the audience below.

Flynn may look more Hollyoaks than Rawhide, but any grumbles of inauthenticity are blown away by the sheer quality of his songwriting and heartfelt delivery.

Having had my appetite whetted by this acoustic set, I hope it’s not long before he’s back in Brighton with his band in order to enjoy the full Johnny Flynn experience.
