A disabled woman says she was almost killed crossing the road because she could not see oncoming traffic for overgrown hedges.

Wendy Hollingsworth had to stand on her mobility scooter to see above the shrubs in Hangleton Road, Hove.

She called on Brighton and Hove City Council to cut the communal bushes outside Moss Chemists.

A reporter called the council and workers were sent to cut the bushes on Wednesday.

Mrs Hollingsworth, 58, of Henfield Way, Hangleton, suffered her near miss last Friday.

She said: “After the other morning I’m scared to go out there.

“I had to stand on my scooter to see the cars but even then it wasn’t possible to see everything.

“As I went to cross the road a car nearly hit me.

“It was only through sheer luck that I wasn’t killed.

“If it had been a small child I dread to think what would have happened.”

Mrs Hollingsworth has to cross the road every day to do her shopping.

She said: “It was an accident waiting to happen.

“The cars just couldn’t see you.

“If the shrubs were not there then I would have been able to cross safely.

“If I can save one life I will be happy.”

Local councillor Dawn Barnett said: “After visiting the site I could see the problems that the lady would have had have.

“It is not six months since we’ve had them cut back and we’ve also had signs put up outside the pub warning drivers that pedestrians use that stretch of road.”

A spokesman for the council said: “We were contacted about this particular issue last year, and sent someone out as soon as we could to trim the shrubs back.”
