Cricket fans are biting back after Sid the Shark was banned from Lord’s for Sussex’s big match this weekend.

Lord’s have told Sid he is not allowed to cheer on his team in tomorrow’s final against Hampshire.

A ban on fancy dress will mean the mascot will be unable to get into the Friends Provident Trophy Final.

In support of the toothy mascot, The Argus has teamed up with Sussex to make sure Sid is represented by the legions of Sussex fans travelling to the ground.

We have produced Sid the Shark masks for supporters to wear while they watch the team’s bid for glory.

The ban provoked outrage from cricket fans and the club’s website has been bombarded with comments from angry supporters.

Hundreds of people signed an online petition in protest but to no-avail as Lord’s stood by their rule.

The Argus took the mask onto the streets of Brighton yesterday and found plenty of fans keen to show their support for Sid and the lads.

Brothers Luke, 12, and Adam Sowton, nine, from Faygate, near Horsham, said: “It's unfair and he should be allowed in. The fans will want to see him there because it's Sussex and he's a big part of that.

“Sussex will definitely win it, no problem.”

Eight-year-old Millie Hall from Brighton agreed. She said: “I think Sussex will win, hopefully.”

Andrew Leader from Hove said: “Both teams are in good form and they're well matched. But Sussex are pretty good in this trophy. I think Matt Prior playing will make a big difference and Sussex will probably win it.”

Even cricket fans from outside the county are putting their hopes on Sussex taking the trophy.

Bryan Burrows was on a day-trip to Brighton from Shroton, Dorset, where he is chairman of the local cricket club.

He said: “I do hope Sussex win on Saturday, it'll be great for the team.”

* Sid The Shark may be banned from attending Saturday’s final - but fear not, The Argus is providing Sid masks to be worn on the day.

Inspired by fans' outrage, The Argus has decided to do its best to ensure Sid is at the game in spirit, if not in person.

We have produced thousands of masks to give to supporters travelling up to the game.

Are you going to the game? Here's how to get your mask.

Fans travelling by train to London from Brighton and Hove stations and on supporters’ coaches who buy a copy of the Argus will get a goodie bag which includes a Sid mask, plus our eight-page Friends Provident Trophy final special and other treats.

Look out for the masks outside Lord’s as well, and make sure you wear one and show your support for Sid and Michael Yardy’s men on the big day.

Also don’t miss The Argus on Monday for match reports and pictures of fans from the day. Updated coverage will also be uploaded to our website, theargus.co.uk And we want your pictures from the final.
