This much-loved musical is one of a select few that have transferred successfully from screen to stage.

The show, set amid the transition from silent films to the talkies, depicts the machinations needed to cover up the atrocious speaking voice of Lina Lamont, a diva of the silent era. Her screen partner, Don Lockwood, finds romance with Cathy Selden, whose voice is perfect for the necessary dubbing.

It is full of wonderful songs and exciting dance routines, including the iconic title number, complete with on-stage rain.

Tim Flavin has long been considered the heir to Fred Astaire’s crown, but his performance as Lockwood passes him a second inheritance – Gene Kelly’s. He has it all – from the cheeky smile to the exuberant footwork, notably in the tap numbers.

There are also knock-out performances from Graeme Henderson as Lockwood’s sidekick and Jessica Punch as Selden. He is a bundle of comic energy, while she is pure charm and sings sweetly.

Amy Griffiths takes on the difficult role of Lina Lamont, the dumb blonde with the shrill Bronx accent. Furthermore, she is required to deliver a song that is off key and flat, which she does very well, proving it takes a good singer to sing badly.

If one must have a grouse, it would have to be with the sets. Unfortunately, allowing for the limitations of a touring production, they looked cheap and unexciting.
