Mary Mears has responded to the letter by M Benson (Letters, August 18). But I have a question for her.

Just ask the traffic planners if the road up the hill east of Rottingdean is wide enough for two large articulated lorries and a bus to pass safely at anything other than a crawl.

If, and this is a big if, safety was the primary concern then this stretch of road from Rottingdean to Longridge Avenue should revert to single lane each way.

Then take a look at the hill west of Rottingdean and imagine you are a driver that has turned right at the junction towards Brighton, that sees, for the first time, the two empty lanes uphill and one lane down; then overtakes a slow car in front.

If safety is your primary concern then these two issues at least should be eliminated by the road reverting to single lane each way.

Both of these issues I have raised have the real potential for a serious accident. Although I accept that taxpayers money should not be wasted, it should not be used to promote single issue ideology that benefits the few and not the many.

Neither, in my opinion, should taxpayers’ money be used to increase the profits of commercial enterprises.

It will cost money to correct this awful piece of road planning. Be brave and do it!
