Congratulations to East and West Sussex county councils for having the vision to consider reducing speed limits in an attempt to halt a rise in road deaths (The Argus, August 17).

Brighton and Hove City Council would do well to learn from their neighbours. They should take a similar bold step to reduce the death and injury on our city’s roads and cut speed limits to 20mph on all streets where people live, work, play or go to school. More and more towns and cities across the country are now recognising that this is the most effective way to make their streets safer.

The current piecemeal approach employed in Brighton and Hove of setting up a 20mph zone here and there or of waiting until a tragedy occurs is either too little or too late.

Communities across the city are crying out to have the speed of the traffic on their streets reduced. One only has to witness councillors of all political persuasions literally queuing up at council meetings to deliver the latest pleas and petitions on their residents’ behalf to see how popular such a move would be.

Unfortunately the only response residents ever hear from the leadership of this Conservative administration is that “we will” or “we are looking into it”. Residents understandably ask, “Where is the vision? Where is the action?”.

I would urge the Conservative administration to really listen to their residents on this issue and then to demonstrate that they can act in response to what they hear. Please cut speed limits now across the city and put people first.
