Students at two of the city’s top colleges will be making their way to Oxford and Cambridge universities after collecting their A-level results today.

Eighteen students from BHASVIC and 18 from independent school Brighton College have achieved the top grades they needed to get into the prestigious universities.

They will be among the thousands of teenagers celebrating across Sussex today as they return to their colleges and schools to discover how they have done in their exams.

For many it will mark the end of several weeks of anxiously waiting to find out whether they have got in to their chosen university.

BHASVIC students achieved an overall pass rate of 97.6% and 58.5% gained A and B grades.

Principal Chris Thomson said: “Yet again, BHASVIC students have achieved outstanding results and I would like to congratulate everyone involved: schools, parents and above all our excellent staff and students.”

Brighton College had a record set of results with 95% A and B grades.

Headmaster Richard Cairns said: “I am particularly proud of this year group as they spent so much time and energy in sport, drama, music and so on yet never lost sight of the need to put in the work when required.”

The county’s largest college, Sussex Downs College, had more than 3,000 entries this summer.

The college, which incorporates Park College in Eastbourne and Lewes Sixth Form, achieved an overall pass rate of more than 97%, with about 74% of exams passed at A to C grades.

Dr John Blake, principal and chief executive of the college, said: “The real worth, strength and quality of our college is to be found in the excellence of our staff and the brilliance of our students.”

At Worthing College more students than ever achieved passes at A-level, with an overall rate of nearly 98%. 69.2% of students gained grades A to C.

Principal Peter Corrigan said: “These results are just rewards for the continued hard work, dedication and effort of young people and staff at Worthing College and reflect the quality of teaching and learning we offer.”

Independent school’s have also done well this year.

Burgess Hill School for Girls obtained 81% of all A-level grades at A or B.

Brighton and Hove High School is also celebrating after gaining 57% A grades, 75% A and B grades and 92% A to C grades, with an overall pass rate of 99%.

Students at Lancing College received high results with 85.3% being graded A or B. 40.1% of all candidates achieved at least three A grades.
