A council boss who boasted his area was one of the safest to live in has had his house burgled.
John Jory, the chief executive of Mid Sussex District Council, last week sent out an email to council staff telling them the district was one of the best places to live in the country.
The email followed an attack on former mayor of Haywards Heath Richard Goddard and read: “Officially Mid Sussex is the 16th best place to live in the country and we do have the lowest crime figures in Sussex.”
However, Mr Jory then had his house broken into while he was at home with his family in Lucastes Avenue, Haywards Heath.
The burglar managed to get into the house through an upstairs window as Mr Jory’s youngest son slept in a nearby bedroom and Mr Jory and his wife were downstairs.
It was only when the couple were going to bed that they realised what had happened.
Mr Jory said: “This has been a traumatic episode and my wife and children have been affected by it.
“It has been extremely upsetting losing personal possessions as they had sentimental value and some were irreplaceable.
“I am trying to reassure my family that the area is a safe place with recent figures showing around a 10% reduction in crime across Mid Sussex.”
Jewellery including sapphire earrings and silver cufflinks were taken in the raid on August 14.
Anyone with information should contact Haywards Heath CID on 0845 6070999.
