Yobs hurled glass bottles at one another in a street as terrified passersby looked on.
The group, of between 20 and 30 males, clashed in Clarendon Road, Hove, at about 12.30pm.
It is believed they may have been football fans.
Sussex Police received around 30 calls from worried members of the public about the incident.
A police spokesman said: “There was a large group in Clarendon Road shouting and fighting and some glass bottles were thrown around.
“No injuries were reported and it seems the group had dispersed when officers attended the scene.”
