Society seems to demand that we should look a certain way, and buy certain products. Society sometimes makes youngsters feel inadequate if they can’t live up to societies rigid standards.

Most people over eat a little when they are fed up! Sometimes though, it could be more serious than just being fed up!

Outside pressures, mental turmoil, serious health problems and low self esteem can all be contributing factors. People with Anorexia are no different, but they make themselves vomit because they feel that society will judge them if they get too fat. The only problem is, just like obesity Anorexia can kill.

We need to be living in a more accepting society, one where you are not judged for having long hair, or for being a different shape or colour. And that’s before you even think about cultural differences.

I remember the clash of the Mods and Rockers in the sixties. Young people were being judged by what form of transport they favoured. Mods rode scooters and wore anoraks while Rockers rode motor bikes and wore leather. The Mods were considered gentle while the Rockers were considered cruel and heartless!

My mother collapsed in the street one day. At that precise moment a group of young Rockers were riding by. They all stopped. Gently they helped mum into a nearby shop where they politely asked the lady to call mum an ambulance. One young chap even stayed until the ambulance arrived.

After that she always waved when she saw groups of Mods or Rockers riding past, saying “Never judge a book by its cover!”

We should all try to follow her example.

People who are overweight know that they are overweight; and it doesn’t help to be criticised.

Most people who are overweight need suggestions on how to manage their money.

How to manage their time?

How to bring up their children, especially those on a tight budget. They may even need help, helping their children to do their homework? It’s all relevant!

Most mums are a little overweight because they are preparing meals at different times of the day for different members of their family.

If families could all sit down together and eat the same food it would be more cost effective. Children would be encouraged to eat more healthily and poor old mum wouldn’t be tempted to nibble all the time.
