Police warning over rise of dangerous new "legal high" on sale in Sussex

Police are carrying out tests on samples of a drug which can cause users to collapse but which is available for purchase in Brighton shops.

Officers from Sussex Police have bought mephedrone at businesses in the city and are now trying to determine exactly what it is made up of.

But they say they can only warn people about the risks involved in taking the drug, which produces similar effects to cocaine and the party drug MDMA.

Despite it being illegal to buy it for human consumption in Britain, it can be bought legally in shops as plant food and is available on the internet.

The drug, nicknamed MCAT or meow, has been compared to a legal form of cocaine. The Home Office says it is investigating the substance as a “priority”.

Police say because there is no legislation involving the possession of the drug for them to enforce they can do little to prevent it being taken.

If it is legal why are the police wasting time on it? Is it because its easier than investigating real crime?

Legal = no business whatsoever of the police. Somebody should charge the police with wasting police time for even looking into this.

Something else that is legal to buy but causes people to collapse is booze. Will the police be looking into that too?

Two others make a similar comment which you choose to ignore but focus on another's - I would suggest that the obession is your own

This is why they should just legalise cannabis! at least then people that want to get a high can do so with relative safety, there is an argument that I don't know whether or not I agree with, which is to legalise all drugs, as people that want to get high will always find a way to do so, legal or not!!!!.

Yet, you choose to comment on it.

Yes I chose to comment on it because on one hand I think it could be a good idea, it would get rid of drug dealers and the people that use drugs would at least know that what their taking is clean, also another tax to give this hard up government more money. but on the other hand all drugs (including alcohol) are bad for you and it is stupid to ruin your body, also a lot of people that take drugs can't afford to do so and frequently turn to crime, so you can see why I'm undecided on the issue of legalising ALL drugs, but I do agree with legalising cannabis and perhaps Ecstasy (more people died of horse riding last year than from taking Ecstasy, so should we ban horse riding)

No problem, I probably needed to explain myself better anyway! it's such a complex issue and one that I see the effects of in my job, the funny thing is if you look on the governments own web site about the top 10 most dangerous drugs Cannabis doesn't even make top 10 yet alcohol come in at no 6 lol, P.S. I must state that I do not, have not and never will take drugs or drink alcohol, I just believe in freedom of choice (within reason).

Why are the police suddenly so obsessed with legal highs? It seems to be an ongoing campaign to harrass the shops and traders who provide alternatives to illegal street drugs.

Well personally I'd never heard of it until Sussex Police and The Argus brought it to my attention so I'm rather grateful to both of them. Not a phrase I thought I'd ever use...

I was commenting on your behaviour- not the content of your comment - strikes me that you, like many other users of this board, are engaged in a witch-hunt when it comes to Bibble's contributions (as evidenced by your action to comment negatively on his/her posting and yet chose not to apply the same criticism to the other contributers).

This must be the stuff my friends are all raving (excuse the pun) about; I believe we are of one mind ;)

Well, this aint knew, its been around for sometime - its legal in the sense that it isnt on the prohibited substances list, which no doubt it soon will be.
We will see more of this kinda stuff as chemists work out how to alter MDMA to get it past the prohibited substances list, MCAT or Meow is more or less the same as MDMA but some clever fellow has 'tagged' anotehr molecule onto it making it MDXX, something that doesnt show up on the substance list, so is entirley legal to take and sell, its banned in alot of places, some kid died in sweden from taking a load of it, wont be long till thats happens here tho will it now

Have been doing some further research and you're pretty accurate except for one minor matter - the death in Sweden of the young woman concerned. She had also been drinking a large amount of alcohol, as well as MDMA and cocaine and the inquest found that she died of the combined effects of all the substances she'd taken over the course of the evening - so whilst this subtsance may have played a part, it can't be claimed it was the sole cause of her death.

pah!
These comments did make me chortle, the police should spend some time investigating the stabbings, crack dealers and chavvy beer boys smashing town to pieces.
Meow may be dangerous but most intoxicants, including alcohol are too.
I read a report of a chap online who took a cap of meow (250 mg) and ended up off work on mazzies for a month because he "became anxious" it's pathetic, if you can't handle your drugs, and don't know "how" to take them, DON'T!
Back to my former point, concentrate on solving some REAL crimes cozzer.
PS is anyone moderating the spelling on the Argus? Comments AND headlines!
