An investigation has been launched after a workman was run over and killed by his own bulldozer.

Mick Streeter died on his way to hospital after he was crushed early yesterday morning.

The 60-year-old from Portslade was part of a team working in darkness on flood defences when the bulldozer rolled over him shortly before 7am.

Police are investigating whether the handbrake could have failed. His death shocked neighbours in the community where he lived with his wife Carole and their sons.

Sussex Police and the Health and Safety Executive were investigating yesterday but there are not thought to be any suspicious circumstances..

Mr Streeter was moving shingle up the beach at Selsey, near Chichester, as part of work to stop high seas causing flooding in the area.

He was crushed when the bulldozer rolled over him but is understood to have suffered a heart attack and died on the way to St Richard’s Hospital in Chichester.
