During the credit crunch, you might expect the last thing people will be doing is splashing out.

But hundreds of people across Brighton and Hove are doing exactly that.

The credit crunch is being identified as the main factor behind a huge surge in applicants wanting to train as lifeguards.

Brighton Swimming Teachers Centre have trained more people in the last three months than they would usually do in a year.

Last year they trained about 330 but since August alone this year they have trained 300.

Such is the demand the centre is holding extra classes.

In December they would usually have one class. This year they are running six courses and they're filling up fast.

There are many perks involved in the role. The job often comes with free access to a health club, one of those little luxuries that people may consider frivolous in a recession.
