New landfill sites are being planned for the Sussex countryside.

They have been revealed in a new East Sussex County Council and Brighton and Hove City Council plan to deal with waste from the area and possibly some shipped in from London.

The proposals for landfill or "landraise" sites in the county have come despite the expected completion of the controversial new incinerator in Newhaven, which is due to open in 2011.

The two councils have identified several areas for possible sites without yet making any specific recommendations.

In a consultation paper on their joint Waste and Minerals Core Strategy they say the landfills would need to be near good road or rail links and away from any conservation areas or towns of more than 1,000 homes.

The plan suggests land near Newick and to the north of Lewes could be suitable for landfill or landraise - the process of dumping rubbish above ground in a prepared site - as well as suggesting waste recovery facilities could be placed alongside the A22, A27, A26, A275 or the Lewes to Haywards Heath railway line.

The area's main existing landfill site at Beddingham, near Lewes, is expected to be full in the near future and the majority of the waste will be redirected to Newhaven.

The latest proposals have drawn criticism from councillors in Brighton and Hove, who said more should be being done to make both residents and businesses reduce and recycle waste so less was going to landfill.
