A customer tackled an armed raider as he held up a betting shop at gunpoint.

The man scuffled with the masked robber, who was wielding a realistic-looking metal imitation revolver, before chasing him out of the shop and down the road.

Officers, who arrested a suspect nearby, have not been able to identify the customer, who they praised for his bravery.

The robbery took place at Coral in Gossops Parade, Gossops Green, Crawley, at 8.55pm on Thursday.

A man wearing a mask and carrying a gun demanded cash from staff.

The workers handed over some money but, while the robbery was taking place, a customer walked into the shop and grappled with him.

The robber ran off, with the customer and a passerby giving chase.

A 49-year-old man was being questioned on Friday. Police later seized an imitation handgun and a bag containing cash, which were found in front gardens in Rother Crescent.

Detective Sergeant Steven Boyle said the unknown customer acted very bravely . He said: "We would like to speak to the man who challenged the robber and gave chase, and anyone who witnessed the robbery."
