WE sympathise with the views expressed by Roberta Greed in relation to road safety around Goldstone Primary School (Letters, November 17).

As the three ward councillors for the area we are working with the school to try and make improvements to the traffic situation during the school run.

We have had the yellow zig-zag lines extended outside the school and have asked the police and the council’s traffic wardens to clamp down on anyone parking illegally.

We have taken two petitions to council meetings about the parking situation and also about introducing a 20mph speed limit.

We have even got nearby Millview Hospital to give parents permission to park in their car park when they are dropping off and collecting children.

However, there is only so much we can do if parents are determined to drive their children literally up to the school gates.

We have stood at the gates and pleaded with them on many occasions to park a few streets away and walk the last 200 yards and some now do this.

It is a great relief the boy that was hit on this occasion was not badly hurt. We would urge parents to work with us to sort this situation out.

The last thing anyone wants is a more serious accident outside the school.
