CONTINUALLY increasing off-peak fares – already the most expensive across the European rail network (The Argus, November 17) – has a knock-on effect causing Brighton and other railway stations to be under-utilised apart from weekday peak trains.

Maybe this will provide an opportunity for the vast Victorian listed Brighton Station to be rejuvenated by transforming it into a world-class arts exhibition arena to rival London’s tourist attractions.

Electric trains do not need huge Victorian steam era stations, so a new station could be built on the underused brownfield railway land adjacent to the modern Lover’s Walk train depot.

The new Brighton Station platforms and concourse could be on the ground floor with shops, offices and a hotel in a skyscraper.

Surely a more sound idea than a former planning application to build a hotel above Brighton Station, which fortunately was massively opposed some years ago by preservationists who had Brighton Station listed?
