Some things just get better with age – much like Alison Moyet.

Forget the image you may have had of the former 1980s electro-pop outfit Yazoo singer. She was barely recognisable as she stepped on stage looking very slim and chic in a full-length, figure-hugging black dress. She looked amazing.

And it’s more than just her figure that Moyet’s slimmed down for this fabulous 25 Years Revisited Tour. She’s also stripped back many of the songs that brought her fame so young, with the synthesisers banished and replaced by a stylish four-piece band including piano, guitar and drums.

And Moyet, smiling throughout the performance, has reinvented her hits from the last quarter of a century to give them a fresh new sound, making them as accessible to those hearing them for the first time as to die-hard fans.

Luckily, the famous voice has not lost any of its weight and richness, and the night was a mix of reworked retro pop classics, such as Is This Love, All Cried Out, Don’t Go and Weak In The Presence Of Beauty, and, as the Essex singer described them, less cheerful songs.

“There’s some cheerfulness to come later,” she announced at one point, still smiling. “But sadness makes me happy.” So we were treated to Love Letters, Only You and That Ole Devil Called Love as well as a beautifully slow Windmills Of Your Mind.

“You go girl!” an audience member shouted out near the end. And we all seemed to agree that she certainly did.
