Drivers have been stuck in tailbacks after four crashes on one of Sussex's busiest routes this morning.

Sussex Police said the first accident happened at about 7.20am near Falmer, where two vehicles were involved in a collision leaving one lane of the eastbound carriageway partially blocked.

Just 25 minutes later, three cars were involved in a pile up a few miles further along the eastbound carriageway. A Nissan Micra, Citroen Berlingo and Royal Mail van involved in the crash at about 7.45am.

At least one of the drivers received slight injuries and an ambulance was called.

At 8.10am a third eastbound crash involving two cars took place. Police said a silver Skoda car was damage but no one was injured in the collision near to the slip road for the A23 on the eastbound carriageway.

The westbound carriageway also suffered disruption.

At about 8.20am two cars crashed near the Southwick tunnel. One car left the road and one lane was partially blocked, causing delays of about 40 minutes.

A spokeswoman for Sussex Police said: "I think a lot of it has been caused by rubbernecking.

There are queues in both directions as people slow down to look and then further crashes have happened.

"None of the collisions were particularly serious, but with so many in such a short space of time it has caused a lot of disruption."
