An entertainer has used a law dating back more than 100 years to start his own business.

Birdyman, aka professional juggler Tim Bat, has become a regular sight on the streets of Brighton, selling bird whistles, while eccentrically dressed in a tweed suit.

He applied for a pedlar’s licence under the little known Pedlar’s Act of 1871, which allows him to sell from any public thoroughfare as long as he is mobile at all times, doesn’t cause an obstruction and he moves on after 20 minutes.

Mr Bat, who started the business after corporate entertainment work dried up, said not everyone in authority was aware of pedlar’s licenses. After being stopped from trading by PCSOs, he has now written to Sussex Police asking for clarification about the rules.

Mr Bat is looking for businesses to sponsor or advertise using his character. To find out more, email info@birdy man.co.uk.
