A headmaster has thrown his weight behind Prince Charles in a row over history.
Richard Cairns, the headmaster of Brighton College, said he supports the Prince of Wales’ strong stance on the need to teach the subject in schools.
The story has hit the headlines after Bernice McCabe, a leading headmistress and one of the Prince's closest advisers, said he was “passionate” about preserving lessons in British history.
The remarks were made after Children's Secretary Ed Balls announced that established subject headings such as history and geography will be abolished in primary schools in 2011 in favour of themed lessons on social issues such as global warming.
Mr Cairns introduced a compulsory new course for pupils earlier this year called The Story Of Our Land.
From Year 7 to Year 9 pupils are taught the history of England, starting with the creation of the British Isles.
Mr Cairns, who is a history teacher and teaches the course, said: "The problem with the way history is taught today is that there is no sense of story or chronology."
