Hove MP Celia Barlow must have been pleased to have been upstaged by a Tory councillor at the opening of a new Boots store in Hangleton, Hove (The Argus, November 23).

The organisers had clearly been advised the MP was delayed and would arrive late.

On most occasions the organisers would have informed the public of the situation and the ceremony would have been put back until the guest of honour had arrived.

Such a situation is far from uncommon but on this occasion those present were allowed to take over. Why?

Councillor Barnett did herself and her party no favours by taking over the event when the MP was a mere 35 minutes late. Her comments of “disrespect” and “It’s not the sort of behaviour you expect” speak volumes of what was taking place.

If anyone deserves a public apology concerning this affair, it is Celia Barlow.

Well done to her for turning up under what must have been embarrassing circumstances.
