A large audience braved the howling wind and lashing rain to reach the safe haven of St Andrew’s Church, the setting for a remarkable concert.

The Italian Renaissance-styled building played host to the Royal Academy of Music’s Musical Theatre Company. The magnificent dome of the church resonated as 32 talented young performers, with an accompanying trio, provided a couple of hours of joyous singing delivered with as much gusto as the storm outside.

A medley celebrating 25 glorious years of theatre music showcased over a dozen shows, while a tribute to Elton John’s music included songs from The Lion King and Billy Elliot.

A condensed version of the musical Titanic, arising from a project developed in the Academy’s Drama Studio, enabled scenes to be enacted with full justice delivered to Maury Yeston’s vibrant score.

During the course of the evening each student was given the opportunity to step up and perform a solo spot.

Special guests Brighton & Hove (Actually) Gay Men’s Chorus provided two contrasting numbers – Thomas of Celano’s Dies Irae and Cy Coleman’s Rhythm Of Life.

The concert concluded on a seasonal note with a delightfully arranged selection from Irving Berlin’s White Christmas.
