A murderer's mother has been jailed for trying to smuggle drugs into her son's prison.

Paula Goodman, 52, supplied heroin to her son Aaron, who is a prisoner at a high security prison after killing his stepson.

Crack cocaine addict Aaron, formerly of Church Road, St Leonards, was jailed for life in March 2002 for murdering his girlfriend's son Sam Back, just days before the toddler’s second birthday.

Mrs Goodman visited her son at Wakefield Prison in August. She was caught on CCTV dropping something into a paper cup after hugging her son.

Prison officers saw two packets floating in the cup which Aaron grabbed and put into his mouth.

Mrs Goodman admitted supplying two grams of heroin to her son at Leeds Crown Court on Tuesday.

It was the second time Mrs Goodman has been caught taking drugs to her son in jail.

In 2002 she was jailed for four months for supplying him with cannabis.

The court was told Mr Goodman refused to spit out the packages, but officers restrained him and found the drugs wrapped inside two rubber fingers from a pair of latex gloves.

Toddler Sam died a long and “excruciatingly painful” death after Mr Goodman injured him, rupturing his bowel. He was jailed for the public protection and told can only be released after 13 years if he is no longer deemed a threat to public safety.

Sam would have taken several hours to die from his injuries and his body was then left in his cot for 18 days.

Sam’s mother Emma Back was convicted of cruelty and conspiring to prevent the burial of a corpse.

Mrs Goodman and her husband were forced to move house to pay off their son’s drug debts after he was jailed, Leeds Crown Court was told.

Jailing Mrs Goodman for 30 months, Recorder Peter Collier QC said: “You know what happens to all those who get caught taking drugs into prison. It causes all manner of problems.”
