The introduction of a congestion charge in the city is a good idea and would help ease the continual traffic jams that seriously delay public transport on a daily basis in the city (The Argus, December 12).

This should be done after a full feasibility study and all opinions are sought.

Although it has already been established the charge is highly unpopular in the city, I think people could be persuaded if good, reliable public transport in and out of the city could be organised.

The charge is only one of a number of measures being considered by the new power- sharing authority running the city’s affairs. A good park-and-ride system would be essential for the charge to be accepted by residents and visitors.

Getting vehicles out of the city centre is vital for the running of good reliable public transport.

My main concerns would be the effect on businesses if people could not enter the city by car unless they paid.

Shoppers like to have easy access to shops, which normally means by car. If this is not possible without a charge, they would consider shopping elsewhere. However, other parts of Sussex have also looked at the possibility of congestion charges.
