With reference to Tim Carder (Letters, December 20): I, like Tim and many other readers frequent the Brighton Family History Centre and value it greatly.

On reading Tim’s letter I decided to email councillor David Smith.

Looking on the Brighton and Hove Councillors website for Coun Smith’s email address, I came across the following text found under the heading “Good news for city’s libraries”.

I quote the last paragraph.

“I believe that good libraries can genuinely enrich the lives of people from all age groups and inspire them to broaden their knowledge and understanding of the world. They are a real success story in Brighton and Hove and I intend to build upon that.”

The Brighton History Centre complies with the definition of the word “library” as set out in the English dictionary.

The author of the quotation above was Councillor Mary Mears, leader of Brighton and Hove City Council – so I assume we have no fear of this jewel of Brighton closing.

Or could it be the case of yet another politician’s fabrication?

Coun Smith’s email address wasn’t on the website, by the way.
