Golfers were putt out when their newest member went missing from their club.
A two-metre bush cut into the shape of a golfer was dug up and removed by thieves just six weeks after it was planted at Sweetwood Park Golf Course.
The unique topiary figure cost £1,700 and was specially imported to Sussex to preside over the course at Holtye, near East Grinstead.
A Sussex Police spokesman said: ”It is believed that several people would have been needed to dig up the bush, and lift it over the golf club perimeter fence.”
Sergeant Dave Price said, "This is an extremely unusual theft of a unique item. I am extremely keen to speak to anyone who knows the whereabouts of the bush.
“If anyone sees the item, is offered the item, or has any information about the people responsible for taking it, I would ask them to get in touch with me.”
To contact Sgt Price please call Sussex Police on 0845 6070999, quoting serial 1215 of December 12, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
