Albion fans readying themselves for a trip to Aston Villa have called for a new giant flag – after their old one disappeared.

For supporters who spend most of the season visiting gloomy, roofless and half-empty grounds, the glamour of the FA Cup is a chance to go out in force, backing their team with a show of strength and song.

It is only natural, then, for the 6,000 plus fans planning to travel to the midlands this Saturday, to want to take their giant flag with them.

There is just one problem - the flag is missing, believed binned.

The 64ft by 32ft banner read “BHAFC Sussex By The Sea” and was unfurled at grounds around the country between 2001 and 2005.

It was dedicated to Albion fan Robert Eaton, an Albion fan who was killed while working at the World Trade Centre on September 11.

Rolled up, it took several people to carry and became a suspension-busting burden for those who stepped forward to transport it.

Supporters experienced problems when they went to grounds with pillars in the stands, as the flag could not be passed along their ranks.

Cleaning required the services of a specialist sailmaker - with the bill running to several thousand of pounds.

The flag has not been seen since building improvements were carried out at Withdean in 2005.

It is believed to have been stored in an anonymous-looking bag in a shed which was removed for the work to take place, and thrown away with the other detritus.

The fans behind its creation have combed Withdean at the club’s invitation to try to find it, but to no avail.

Albion fans are now calling for a new flag to become the pride of Brighton.
