Plans to cut library opening times across West Sussex would save council bosses £200,000 a year.

About three in four libraries would have reduced hours under proposals put forward by West Sussex County Council.

Council chiefs say the plans will create more uniform library opening hours and ensure that all libraries are open six days a week.

Most affected by the plans would be library users in Littlehampton who will have nine hours less a week to take out books and DVDs while readers in Goring, Worthing and Rustington, near Littlehampton, will also see their weekly opening hours cut by five hours.

A total of 11 library positions would also be cut.

Council documents indicate these redundancies will be achieved through “vacancy management and redeployment” where possible.

The council is also hoping to save an additional £236,000 by reducing the number of newspapers and magazines stocked.

The savings generated by the changes will be reinvested in the library service including paying for trials of collection and drop-off points outside the libraries.

Only five libraries will keep their current opening hours and four libraries will see their opening hours increase.
