Police say burglary has become a significant problem in central Brighton.

Paul Knight, the priority crime reduction officer at John Street Police Station, said residents can significantly reduce the risk of their home being targetted by carrying out these ten tips:

1) Locking all windows and doors. Fit mortise locks or bolts to all outside doors, and locks to all downstairs or easily accessible windows.

2) Keeping valuables out of sight. E.g don't leave laptops in full view of the window.

3) Keeping your house and car keys away from doors and windows.

4) Visibly marking your property with your house number and postcode.

5) Sensor lighting at the front and back of properties can help deter thieves.

6) Joining your local Neighbourhood Watch Scheme.

7) Consider fitting a house alarm.

8) Remove ladders that can be used to break into upstairs rooms.

9) Be a good neighbour. Report suspicious behaviour.

10) When away from home for a period of time: Tell trusted neighbours you are away and ask them to keep an eye on your property.

Make sure your home looks like someone is living in it.

Don't close your curtains – in daytime this shows the house is empty.

Think about getting automatic time-switches to turn your lights on and off.

Cancel any milk or newspaper deliveries if you're away on holiday.
