Sussex's perfect pooches honoured at Crufts

A pack of almost perfect pooches, including a greyhound bound for the scrap heap and a bomb detecting Labrador, have scooped top prizes in the dog Oscars.

It might sound like a shaggy-dog story, but seven-stone greyhound Joe the Giant was saved after being abandoned at the end of his racing career.

Owner Denise Stovell, 42, of Lancing, helped get the former Hove stadium competitor back on track.

Just 18-months after being taken into an animal rescue centre, Joe the Giant won a gold medal in the racing category at Crufts.

Meanwhile puppy Marley and her grandmother Diva proved that good looks run in the family by winning first and second prize in their categories.

Owner Sandy Rothery, of Herbert Road, Sompting, near Lancing, said she was 'ecstatic' at the success of her Burnese mountain dogs.

The dog Oscars. Don't be silly. Just call it Crufts as ithe headline, unless of course a dog has won an Oscar at the Oscars.

sorry this story is lies
Joe the Giant was not bound for the scrap heap or abandoned this dog was rehomed after his racing career and was never in an animal rescue centre

Again the Argus getting on the anti Greyhound bus, an absolute disgrace, Joe the Giant was not abandoned and was never in any rehoming rescue centre. When he finished racing his owners family rehomed him. If you had took the trouble to research the Brighton Greyhound Owners Association news letter you would see an article on Joes life .What was a fantastic week for him and his owners has now turned sour due to discraceful misquoting by so called journalists

Well done to Diva and Marley - from a Sompting dog owner.

However you look at it, Joe the Giant was, and is one lucky greyhound.

This is more than can be said for the thousands of greyhounds abandoned and abused since the inception of Hove Stadium. The hidden death and destruction of a uncaring sport.

Hove Greyhound Stadium
has the death's of so many greyhounds staining it's past that any story that highlights even one greyhound coming away from the sport alive should be a cause for celebration, and not a cudgel to beat this newspaper with.

You bet, they die. The epitaph of Hove Greyhound Stadium.
