Mothers are turning to part-time work to socialise and gain independence as well as for financial gain, a survey showed yesterday.

More than a quarter of mothers said working part-time allowed them to make new friends and give them a work-life balance.

A poll of 1,000 part-time workers for Domino's Pizza found most wanted a better quality of life as much as earning extra cash.

Domino's said the research highlighted a growing trend for women to take a part-time job for social as well as financial benefits.

Of 350 working mothers questioned, a third said working part-time gave them independence and almost half said the main benefit was allowing them to juggle home and work lives.

Jane Roberts, head of human resources at Domino's, said: "We have seen an increase in the number of women who work for us mainly because they want to take on work that is as flexible as they have to be."
