Regarding the issue of dangerous emission levels in the Lewes/Elm Grove area of Brighton (The Argus, June 3), one can only assume that the threshold figure of 40-microgrammes was tested during the prolonged road works.

A journey down Lewes road to the seafront took 28 minutes, what with roadworks and pavement widening.

Before any more road improvement schemes are hashed together, let's look at a solution to the council's problem.

Give the motorist back his expensive tarmac, reduce the pavements, run smaller buses during non-peak times and reintroduce the conductor service during peak time operation.
