Corn Exchange, Brighton Dome, Tuesday May 4

Already a big name in his native Norway, pianist Tord Gustavsen's debut album, Changing Places, which was released last year, brought his unique jazz aesthetic to the world stage.

Perhaps not a picture book of big surprises, it was nevertheless a uniformly persuasive and eloquent yet emphatically softspoken and delicate piece of work.

Tord tends to emphasise folk traditions, drawing from sources as disparate as gospel and Nordic music, while it's not uncommon for a recurrent tango theme to pop up now and again, lending a degree of likeable and accessible drama.

The trio interact brilliantly together to produce a sophisticated sound.

Bassist Harald Johnsen has that rare kind of intuition which no amount of education or training can produce, while drummer Jalre Vespestad has a light but crisp touch and is an excellent ground for the group.

Both free up Tord to pursue his muse without any fixed responsibilities.

This is one act that seems assured a permanent place in the pantheon of down-tempo jazz pioneers.

Tues, May 4. Starts 8pm, tickets £12.50. Call 01273 709709.
