Chris Adams' Sussex future is unlikely to be decided until the end of the season after he turned down a new contract for the second time.

The county champions have offered Adams a two-year extension to his current deal which expires in September.

After talks with chairman David Green and committee member Guy Walker this week, Adams is still holding out for a three-year extension.

Sussex's offer will remain on the table and Adams could conceivably sign it any time over the next seven months, but he admitted that is an unlikely scenario.

Adams said: "I must commend the way the chairman and Guy Walker explained the position and why the club cannot offer me three years.

"I have no problem with their argument. I understand they have to be careful about long-term finances.

"I'm disappointed I haven't been offered three years although the club have made a commitment by leaving the door open.

"But the next contract I sign will probably be my last one and I have got to safeguard the future of my family.

"I would be delighted to finish my career at Sussex and hopefully something can still be sorted out at the end of the season.

"If not I could move on although I have to reiterate that would be the last resort."
