I disagree with David Gold (Letters, January 29), who says the schemes for the King Alfred, the Endeavourest and the banana building are uninspiring.

They are only uninspiring to those who have been fossilised and demand a Regency feature on any new building.

Is he telling us that the people of Paris, Prague, Seattle, Bilbao, Los Angeles, Kobe, Minneapolis and Germany have no aesthetic taste?

Each of the Frank Gehry buildings in those locations is admired by locals and tourists alike for its inspiration.

I have no financial interest in those buildings but what I have witnessed all my life is the following formula at work.

Pressure groups cause delays, spiralling costs, compromise and blandness. The result is nobody is happy.

Just consider Falmer Stadium, the West Pier, Brighton Station site, park and ride, Endeavour and so on.

All have been tainted by pressure groups and the city is losing ground to other cities which understand the new century.
